The Plan for the Future

Civic League Day Nursery is preparing to embark on its next stage of development, leaving the outgrown rental quarters and moving to a new level of strength and stability by building a barrier-free facility in the new Harvestview development. This site is within walking distance to homes, a park, the Douglas Trail and the proposed new elementary school.

Site Plan

(Click diagram to enlarge Site Plan.)

The Benefits

The move will allow for additional infant and toddler services as needed in the NW area. It will allow us to occupy and control our own space, giving us the flexibility to develop the aesthetic and educational qualities promoted by the Civic League Day Nursery.

The plan calls for:

  • A 10,227 sq. ft. strtucture with two infant rooms and a kitchenette between them.
  • Two toddler rooms
  • One room each for 3, 4, and 5-year olds. Each room will have an adjacent, handicap accessible restroom and adequate storage space.
  • A play/activity room
  • 3 separate playgrounds - one for infants, one for toddlers, and one for preschoolers

The total estimated cost - including site acquisition - is $2.5 million. It is anticipated that this new NW facility will be funded through a partnership between private donors, area foundations, and corporations.

For 120 years there has been a force at work in Rochester. A positive force working quietly and diligently for...

  • social change
  • equal opportunity, and
  • quality early education

For 120 years the members of Rochester's Civic League have unselfishly given of their time and talents to further the causes of families in our community.

A Rich History of Service

The Women's Civic League of Rochester was formally organized in 1887. The group opened a small office located on First Avenue in 1912 where they continued their work of identifying and providing for unmet commuity needs.

From delivering holiday baskets to low income families in the 1940's and 50's to creating The Homemakers Service - designed to help families when an emergency took a mother away from home - the Civic League warmly touched the lives of those less fortunate.

But the greatest, most positive influence the Civic League has had on our community has been through its commitment to providing quality early childhood education to children of all walks of life.

In 1930 Civic League began providing child care service for working parents with the opening of a Day Nursery in the Woodworth House on Center Street. Volunteers and one employee staffed the nursery. Operational costs were met primarily through private donations.

Recognition of the quality early childhood care and education provided by the Civic League Day Nursery spurred its growth - growth that continues today.

  • With the cooperation of the Mayo Foundation and many volunteers, the original nursery was moved to the Balfour House in 1975.
  • In 1988, a second Civic League Day Nursery opened on the campus of the Rochester Technical College, serving 30 children.

In 2001, the Civic League again demonstrated its commitment to care for the young children of Rochester. By assuming the student population and lease of a former provider, CLDN provided uninterupted child care service to Rochester's fast-growing northwest neighborhood.

Today, the Civic League's northwest site is filled to capacity, leaving the organization unable to increase the number of children with whom it can share its nurturing care and developmental opportunities.

Equal Opportunity

Every mother, father, grandparent and caregiver - regardless of income level - wants the best for their child, and every child deserves the best we can give them.

For generations, Civic League Day Nursery has provided the highest quality child care to famililies from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. With the support of funds from United Way of Olmsted County, the Child Care Tutition Tuition Assistance Program, and Civic League scholarships, financial support is provided to those families with demonstrated need. Currently 41% of Civic League students are receiving some form of tuition assistance. This allows revery child the chance to experience a unique learning adventure with our qualified staff.

What Makes a Civic League Day Nursery Education Unique?

At Civic League Day Nursery every child's individuality is respected. We do not expect a child to fit our mold, but rather embrace the unique gifts each student brings to the learning experience. Our curriculum provides stimulating experiences and opportunities for individual growth.

The carefully planned, developmentally appropriate, daily program helps children realize their full potential and become kindergarten ready. Special needs and high risk children are integrated into our classrooms. These children benefit from a stable and stimulating environment and receive the additional support and services they need to also become kindergarten ready.

The benefits of required and ongoing staff training are evident in the level of success achieved by our students. Civic League Day Nursery routinely offers family workshops and training sessions. This family training supports the classroom curriculum and provides an extension of learning at home.
